Arlington ISD takes an innovative approach to early education by introducing Pre-K 4 students to STEM activities early in their academic careers. Each week, Pre-K 4 Students at Wimbish World Language Academy have a STEM-focused activity that is designed to promote hands-on learning, develop fine motor skills, encourage sensory play, and help students practice following instructions. These weekly trips to the STEM lab are more than just a break from routine; they’re an integral part of preparing students for kindergarten and future academic success.
Our team observed students crafting festive snowmen using shaving cream, googly eyes, and an assortment of shapes. The room buzzed with laughter and chatter, and students were asked to point out the shapes they saw, count the number of buttons, arms, and eyes of their snowmen, and talk through the assembly of their snowmen.
“The Pre-K kids are so excited to spend time in the STEM lab,” shares Ms. Gabby Gonzalez, Wimbish World Language Academy’s STEM Manager. Ms. Gonzalez shares that the students enjoy their time in the lab and learn to express themselves in the hands-on environment.
Beyond the sheer enjoyment, these activities serve a crucial purpose in preparing students for kindergarten. Engaging in hands-on STEM experiences at an early age lays a strong foundation for developing problem-solving and experimenting, skills that research shows provide a strong foundation for a student’s future academic and developmental success.
Dr. Jackeline Orsini, Arlington ISD’s Director of Early Childhood Education, shares that the decision to offer STEM education to Pre-K students comes from wanting the best outcome possible for Arlington ISD students. “I was making all of my decisions from the perspective of “what is best that we can do for our students”. I want every single student to have the best experience possible and have the opportunity to learn and have fun. This experience isn’t for a small portion of students, it’s for all of our students.” Dr. Orsini envisions Arlington ISD as a pioneer setting an example for other districts. “We hope that we are the pioneers of something that other districts can hopefully replicate,” Dr. Orsini expresses, highlighting the ambition to revolutionize early education.
Introducing Pre-K students to STEM education leaves a lasting impact that transcends the classroom. It’s not just about preparing them for the next academic milestone; it’s about fostering a generation of innovative thinkers. These early educational experiences plant seeds that will help future generations grow and prosper.
